Folder-studio-film-itsnicethat-alt-list Work / Film Folder Studio's interactive documentary K-Town '92 highlights our "desensitisation to societal trauma"

The 1992 Los Angeles riots were a series of riots, lootings and arsons that occurred from 29 April – 4 May. The unrest began after the acquittal of four officers from the Los Angeles Police Department who were involved in the brutal beating and arrest of African American taxi driver, Rodney King. The riots began after footage of the incident was broadcast and widely viewed on television resulting in the most destructive civil disturbance in America’s history, totalling in over a billion dollars of damage.

Oliviekeck-longdistancecaller-animation-itsnicethat-3list Work / Digital Artist Olivié Keck explores South African youth culture through a vibrant VR video

South African artist Olivié Keck’s latest project Long Distance Caller is a patchwork of digital tales about self-doubt, love, loss, regret and infatuation. The virtual reality video explores South African youth culture in the 21st century through the lens of the artist’s vibrant and dynamic aesthetic. “I relish loud colours, juxtaposing ideas, jumbled associations and subverting expectations. I tend to use a variety of mediums to estrange people from the commonplace narratives,” Olivié tells It’s Nice That.

Google-fonts-korean-graphic-design-itsnicethat-list-alt Work / Digital Google Fonts Korean becomes interactive by manipulating path data

Initially launched in 2010, Google Fonts is an online collection of fonts available for designers and web developers to embed on their websites, for free. Until very recently, the collection was unable to support Korean. However, Google has now devised a more efficient means of serving Chinese, Japanese and Korean (CJK) font files, which have very large character sets, resulting in large file sizes.

Dbb1b800-3fa9-4429-8772-7ffdccfb6406_rw_1200list Work / Digital Artist Reija Meriläinen turns reality TV into a creepy video game

Playing Reija Meriläinen’s eerie computer game Survivor feels something like being in a bad dream. Starting off in a claustrophobic, fleshy cave, where an over-enthusiastic voiceover explains the rules, there’s a sense of foreboding that you can’t quite put your finger on. It doesn’t help that the sound design is a mix between Twin Peaks-y lullaby and animalistic foley work. The doors seem to growl open rather than creek.

Karltoomey-digital-itsnicethat-1listlist Work / Digital Designer Karl Toomey's new website reveals his secret dark side

Designer Karl Toomey’s AI assistant Alice may be the worst PA in history. Karl’s latest artwork is his new website, which follows Alice’s stream of consciousness through a robotic voiceover and a string of subtitles on a yellow backdrop. Within the first two minutes of meeting her, she not only discloses Karl’s – no doubt – illegal plans to help facilitate burglary but also his violent tendencies that have been made possible by goose fat and pliers in the past.

Displaaytypeanymade-roobert-graphicdesign-itsnicethat-list Work / Graphic Design Anymade and Displaay Type create a tactile and technical typeface in honour of Robert Moog

Curved and strictly straight at the same time, Roobert is a typeface built from an amalgamation of collaborations. Originally created for the identity of Moogfest, a music, art and technology festival in North Carolina, the typeface spans across six weights and a further twelve styles with italics. Despite being made for a specific event, it’s a typeface that is unmistakably versatile, especially when noting its typographic quirks, after all, “these bent little tubes have got their own backstage story!”

April-things-regulars-itsnicethat-list Regulars / Things Paper clips, graphic activism and fried eggs: it's April Things

At the end of every month, we sit down and look through all the exciting bits and bobs which have been posted through our letterbox. From zines to posters and everything in between, the submissions never fail to surprise us, meaning we’ve got an eclectic collection of Things as ever to show you this month (try saying that five times over).

Diary_may_724x474 Regulars / Diary May diary: this month’s must-see events and exhibitions

This month there are a flurry of great new art and design shows opening in London, New York and beyond, and the It’s Nice That team has selected their must-sees. Don’t miss the new Rose Wylie exhibition in Mayfair, nor Nataal’s all-female survey of new African photography in Brooklyn. Elsewhere, there’s two new retrospectives opening at the brilliant Louisiana Museum, and a major Alexander Calder show at Hauser & Wirth in (hopefully) sunny Somerset. h3. Documenting Youth Culture

List-new Work / Animation Nikita Diakur’s chaotic animations are a gross study in dynamic computer simulation

Warning: do not watch the above video if you’re sensitive, hungover or a bit stressed. The work of Russian-born, Mainz-based filmmaker Nikita Diakur might just break you. As part of a hotshot team of animators, Nikita has created Ugly, a film project inspired by stories mined from the internet, each filled with bizarre characters, high-octane urban environments and terrifyingly unpredictable physics.

Amelie-kahn-ackermann-sijiagou-remembering-home-photography-its-nice-that-11list Work / Photography Amelie Kahn-Ackermann's latest series is an ode to one of China’s most remote regions

“I always carried a little snapshot camera with me as a child, but I started taking photography more seriously when I was a teenager living in Beijing. After graduating from high school, I started studying photography at Berlin’s Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie,” Amelie Kahn-Ackermann tells It’s Nice That. Amelie has spent her entire life in metropolises; born in Beijing and studying in Berlin, the cosmopolitan photographer is accustomed to the fast-paced intensity of urban life. Her latest series Sijiagou – Remembering Home, however, is a celebration of one of China’s most remote regions, the home of her grandfather’s village, Sijiagou. Populated by far-reaching hills and magnificent mountain ranges, Sijiagou is made up of a small community of people whose days are determined by seasonal changes and manual labour.

Water Work / Illustration A chat with the Wellcome Collection staffer behind its weekly science comic

Swing by the Wellcome Collection, London’s museum dedicated to all things scientific and weird, and you’re likely to spot Robert Bidder in his uniform, a ‘stylish’ fleece and lanyard. A visitor experience assistant, Robert’s job is to look after the galleries, hold fort on reception, write and deliver talks and, in his words, “tell people where the toilets are”. But what you won’t realise from his cheery customer-focused exterior, is that Robert is also the genius behind the Wellcome Collection’s weekly comic, Body Squabbles. An exploration of scientific discovery ranging from topics like the senses, death and crisps, Robert’s work spans the awe-inspiring, bemusing and downright emosh.

VLF graphic design and art direction studio was founded ten years ago by Thomas Cristiani and Antoine Roux. Distinguished by its bold, clean and contextually sensitive designs, VLF has firmly cemented its name in the fashion industry. Antoine moved to London four years ago, however, transforming VLF into a company with bases on either side of the channel.

Pitchforkfestival2018-alexaandjessicaviscius-graphicdesign-itsnicethat-list Work / Graphic Design Twin sisters Alexa and Jessica Viscius on creating this year's Pitchfork festival identity

The Viscius family must have some kind of brilliant creative ancestry. Twin sisters Alexa and Jessica Viscius are both successful creatives in their own right. Alexa, whose photography intwining graphic design we fell for recently is an art director at female run Chicago-based studio Normal, whereas Jessica is an art director at music publishing figurehead, Pitchfork.

Collins-graphic-design-itsnicethat-9 Work / Graphic Design What do you call a typeface inspired by Jim Henson? Kernit!

There’s not much we love more than a good pun here at It’s Nice That, so when we stumbled across Collins’ latest typeface, we had to find out more. Developed by the agency’s design director, Jules Tardy and its creative director Thomas Wilder, the typeface is inspired by the renowned puppeteer, cartoonist and filmmaker and mastermind behind The Muppets: Jim Henson. Its name? Kernit.

Yasseen-faik-graphic-design-itsnicethat-alt-list Work / Graphic Design "People, places and feelings”: Yasseen Faik's design practice is inspired by the real world

“Art is somewhere I take a lot of inspiration from. My grandmother was a painter,” explains London-based designer Yasseen Faik. “Before I went to university, I was reading books about various periods of contemporary art, from which I found a lot of inspiration visually and in the way of creative thinking.” With movements such as modernism, post-modernism, abstract expressionism, surrealism, minimalism, pop art and hyperrealism emerging as firm interests from his childhood of painting, it was upon starting his foundation course at Camberwell College of Arts that Yasseen began to focus on graphic design.

Jillsenft-treemendous-art-itsnicethat-list Work / Art Jill Senft pairs her fascination with trees and puns in new book Treemendous

Alongside her practice of painting wobbling characters into the funniest and most absurd scenarios, Berlin-based artist Jill Senft has developed a fascination with trees. In particular, it’s when a cluster of trees are horticultured together in an arboretum that caught the painter’s eye, thinking she would collect the different trees together in some sort of book or zine, “which I quickly found boring as it already exists,” she says.

List2 Work / Animation Paul Cabon confronts the inevitability of going bald via a surreal animated short

“Being a bald man sucks,” says French animator Paul Cabon in the intro to his animated film The Bald Future. “Knowing you’ll become one is worse.” A surreal and charming exploration of the inescapable combination of genes and time, the film takes you from Paul’s initial realisation of his eggheaded fate during a family meal consisting of entirely bald relatives, to outlandish fantasies of his thick-maned alter ego – a life that Paul will never lead. “I knew going bald was not such a serious problem,” Paul tells It’s Nice That, “yet it was really hard to get some distance and feel ok about it. I realised it could be interesting comedy material because of that – there was some tension behind it.”

Davidshrigley-art-itsnicethat-list Work / Art David Shrigley: "Question Time is like watching people having an argument in a pub"

David Shrigley is venting. I’ve asked him about the inspiration behind his new book, Fully Coherent Plan for a New and Better Society, and in typically humble fashion his first answer is, “I dunno, the usual stuff.” But then, he admits there’s more to it. “It’s kind of a political book, but a sociological take on it. More of an explanation of society. It purports to make sense, but it doesn’t. Someone told me the other day it was profound… and I said, oh, ok good.” Obviously, the title is ironic, he clarifies, just one of the book’s many jabs at the state of the world’s current affairs. “If we had a fully coherent plan for a new and better society we would’ve put it into action long before now.”

Hedvigjenning-nand-itsnicethat-photography-list Work / Photography Hedvig Jenning's dreamy fashion photography creates and captures individual characters

Soft, pastel hues permeate Swedish photographer Hedvig Jenning’s work, whether it’s a fashion shoot for The Guardian or a body positivity series for Odda magazine. Her images are romantic and dreamy, but maintain a lighthearted tone due to subtle, humorous details. Hedvig grew up in a small village in rural Sweden where she spent her days watching films, reading magazines and listening to music. Popular culture played a pivotal role in getting her interested in photography and pursuing a creative career.

Richard-turley-publication-itsnicethat-list Work / Publication Civilization by Richard Turley is a "half newspaper, half support group" about New York City

“I went to BJ Magazines on Varick Street at lunch – one of the better places to get magazines [in New York], but somewhere I’ve been going less and less,” recalls designer and art director, Richard Turley, of the day back in January he decided to create his latest project, Civilization. “I walked around and it felt different from how I remember and I was trying to work out why; then it occurred to me that the reason it felt different was because half of the shop was now crisps and corn snacks. Maybe this change had been happening for some time, but it felt quite shocking.”
