Nicer-tuesdays-june-launch-list Regulars / Nicer Tuesdays Get tickets now for Nicer Tuesdays June

Tickets are now available for our next Nicer Tuesdays event, taking place on the evening of 26 June at Oval Space. Our speaker line-up this month features illustrator and member of collective Le Gun, Robert Rubbish; founder and editor-in-chief of Season zine Felicia Pennant; animation director Nicos Livesey; and Belgian graphic design studio Atelier Brenda.Graphic design studio Atelier Brenda – though often referred to colloquially, and mysteriously, as if Brenda is a single entity – is actually made up of three female graphic and type designers, Nana Esi, Sophie Keij and Amélie Bakker. Brenda is their alter ego, with a character to match, and a way for the trio to join forces post university and garner clients – which worked a treat. Each designer has their own graphic style and skillset, which they bring to the studio’s unique and lively work. Nana and Sophie will be joining us to share their latest creations.
Irreverent and renowned illustration collective Le Gun have long been staples of the London creative scene, and Robert Rubbish is one of its charismatic members. Not only known for his work, he’s a familiar sight around town too, particularly Soho, the subject of much of his work and recent book, Spiritus Soho_. Depicting the area’s idiosyncratic characters and ambience to a T, the images show Robert is a master storyteller, so we’re very keen to hear him tell us more from the Nicer Tuesdays podium.
In the month of the World Cup, we’re excited to have Felicia Pennant, founder and editor-in-chief of "_Season
zine":https://www.season-zine.com/, join us to speak about its fifth issue. Founded in 2016 as a football and fashion publication for female football fans, to “counter the male, pale and sometimes stale state of modern football culture”, its stories are pioneering, empowering and a much-needed breath of fresh air in the publishing landscape. Felicia will be telling us about issue five, which explores religion and faith in football.Animation director Nicos Livesey was one of It’s Nice That’s Ones to Watch 2017, selected for his incredible stop motion films. These include the mesmerising claymation video Glore for Radkey, part of Channel 4’s Random Acts series, a stop motion ad for Maynards Bassetts made from icing and jelly, and an entirely sewn music video for his band Throne. He recently returned to working with embroidery, collaborating with The London Embroidery Studio to create the BBC’s World Cup trailer. He’ll be telling us how this intricate film was made.

Nicer-tuesdays-may-recap-list Regulars / Nicer Tuesdays From Migrant Journal to Isle of Dogs, Nicer Tuesdays May explored great creative works

Nicer Tuesdays always spans an eclectic mix of topics, but May’s edition was a veritable smorgasbord of creative inspiration. Taking to the podium at Oval Space, Offshore Studio’s Christoph Miler discussed the “missing voice” of the discourse surrounding the migrant crisis, before Kyle Platts explored character design and animation; then graphic designer Erica Dorn shared the intricate research undertaken for Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs; before Sam Conniff taught us about the Golden Age of Pirates. Here, we pick out just some of the learnings from last night.h3. Independent publishing has the power to impact history

Nicer-tuesdays-april-will-anderson-list Regulars / Nicer Tuesdays Will Anderson on his Bafta-nominated animation, Have Heart

Fresh from a Bafta nomination and winning best short at the British Animation Awards, animator Will Anderson spoke about his much-lauded film Have Heart. In a captivatingly simple aesthetic, the animation tells the story of a weary animated gif stuck in a loop on the internet, on the cusp of an existential crisis.

Nicer-tuesdays-april-natalia-stuyk-list Regulars / Nicer Tuesdays Video artist Natalia Stuyk on crossing from the digital to the physical world

Natalia Stuyk is a video and digital artist who creates surreal, warping imagery in vivid saturated colours. Her commercial work often sees her collaborate with brands such as Kenzo, Nike and Stella McCartney, making fashion films, music videos and everything in between. Much more at home in the digital space, Natalia spoke at Nicer Tuesdays about her recent move into the physical space, collaborating on installations for Galeria Melissa in New York over the coming summer.

Nicer-tuesdays-april-max-siedentopf-list Regulars / Nicer Tuesdays Max Siedentopf explains why creative perfection is a dead end

Max Siedentopf is a creative working in advertising, who on the side creates a myriad of brilliantly oddball and original personal projects. But it is this eclectic output that can sometimes confuse people, he admitted at Nicer Tuesdays. “I’m pretty sure that no one here has any idea who I actually am,” he joked, and attempted to clear things up by telling us about his work at KesselsKramer – where he recently became partner – as well as his latest passion projects including a sticker book, gif series Instructions for World Peace, and Ordinary magazine.

Nicer-tuesdays-april-marion-deuchars-list Regulars / Nicer Tuesdays Marion Deuchars on how to make a great picture book

The idiosyncratic brushwork and hand-drawn typography of illustrator Marion Deuchars is instantly recognisable, and have charmed children and grown-ups alike in her many books. Recently, Marion has been both educating and inspirational in her books about the art world, particularly in Bob the Artist, which aims to teach kids about well-known artistic techniques while also encouraging individuality. The new follow-up Bob’s Blue Period is about expressing emotions through creativity, and is loosely based, she explains, on Picasso’s story of loss.

Pitch_studios_-_mood_machine_-_digital_-_itsnicethat_-_01 Work / Digital Pitch Studios create mesmerising, immersive digital experiences which invoke unique moods

A breathtaking recent project from future-forward thinking Pitch Studios has caught our eye and captured our mood. Back in May, the Australia-based studio collaborated with New York artist Matthew Keff and Melbourne music producer Lewis Cancun to create a mesmerising, immersive digital experience, Mood Machine, exploring the emotions induced by modern technologies.

Nicer-tuesdays-kyle-platts-list Regulars / Nicer Tuesdays Kyle Platts explains why teaching himself to animate was valuable to his practice

There’s no mistaking the handiwork of illustrator and animation director, Kyle Platts. Vivid and cartoonish compositions filled with strange, wobbly characters, their ballooned foreheads in profile bearing enlarged eyes, are his forte, and a long-time favourite of the It’s Nice That team. Here, he speaks about his recent dabblings in animation and the increasing desire to make his characters move, making utterly brilliant and hugely popular gif artworks.

Cecile-legnaghi-graphic-design-itsnicethat-list Work / Graphic Design Graphic designer Cécile Legnaghi questions the role of display and caption fonts in her practice

“The project was born from questioning the use of a typeface today, and its trends, especially concerning its body size,” explains Paris-based graphic and type designer Cécile Legnaghi of her diploma project. While studying at École Estienne, she became fascinated by designers’ choices to utilise display typefaces at caption size – and vice versa. In response, Cécile set out to design three of her own, with the intention of them being used in both contexts.

Polinavasilyeva-graphicdesign-itsnicethat-list Work / Graphic Design Yale graduate and communications designer Polina Vasilyeva is a conductor of content

The portfolio of Russian-born Yale graduate Polina Vasilyeva is an amalgamation of communication design bits and bobs. The mix of styles and applications Polina dips and dives in and out of is easily seen on the designer’s website, which places them all together, on top of one another and side by side. “My website came from the initial desire to see the collection of my work as if it were laid on the table in front of the viewer,” Polina tells us. “A lot of my work as a designer deals with the performance, I believe that graphic design is a form of theatre, in which the designer is a conductor of the content that is being presented to the world.”

In 2008, Birmingham-born photographer Robert Darch moved to Exeter, Devon in the south west of England. In that decade, the area would come to shape the geographical context of Robert’s work, of which the series Durlescombe is a large part. An ongoing project, Durlescombe tells the story of a fictional, yet altogether typical Devonshire village, through documentary photography, Robert’s own family photos and found illustrations.

Mullenlowe-novaawards-miscellaneous-itsnicethat-2list Sponsored / Miscellaneous It's Nice That's Ali Hanson on judging this year's CSM degree shows for the MullenLowe NOVA Awards

What do Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Jarvis Cocker, M.I.A and Antony Gormley have in common? Other than being internationally celebrated creatives, each of these big names was at one point a student at London’s world-renowned art, design and performance college, Central Saint Martins. With its long list of impressive alumni, it’s no surprise that the school’s annual degree shows attract a flock of art critics and culture journalists who seek to champion the school’s latest promising artists.

Poster-2 Work / Printed Pages Jean Jullien visualises the quirks of the British accent for the new Printed Pages poster

From a gruff Glaswegian growl to an Essex wide boy’s clipped vowels, we’ve got some damn good accents here in the UK. These peculiarities of pronunciation are something that has fascinated illustrator Jean Jullien ever since he first moved to the UK from France and was his inspiration when creating the poster you’ll find in the new issue of Printed Pages, which you can get your mitts on now.

Having grown up together and studied photography at the same university, the duo’s interests and preferences have evolved harmoniously over time. This includes a curious inclination to the meat industry’s inner workings, which are explored in their first collaborative series, Fiambre.

Wardour-news-publication-itsnicethat-list Features / Miscellaneous A final goodbye to London's Wardour News from i-D, Dazed, Fantastic Man and many more

For any Londoner, or anyone visiting the capital, with a love of the printed page, Wardour News in Soho was the go-to spot to find the niche, interesting titles alongside the big hitters. It’s with a heavy heart that we use the word “was” as, at the end of last month, the newsagent closed its doors becoming the latest victim of rising rents in central London.

Dariomaglionico-art-itsnicethat-2list Work / Art Dario Maglionico’s impeccable paintings of partly-transparent, trendy young adults

Dario Maglionico’s paintings of young adults wearing Adidas trainers, working on Apple Macs and drinking glasses of red wine in their shared apartments don’t seem too far off from reality do they? Except they are. Despite the photographic accuracy of Dario’s skilfully crafted worlds, the inhabitants often appear multiple times, either blending into the furniture or sporting missing heads and invisible torsos.

Onomatopee-publication-itsnicethat-list Work / Publication A rundown of Onomatopee Projects' critically engaging (and good looking) publications

Onomatopee Projects, started by Freek Lomme and Remco van Bladel, is hard to define. The duo – a curator and writer and graphic designer respectively – started the project in May of 2006 as they wanted to “step up for progressive culture, as well as engage smart and interesting people” within their community in Eindhoven. Now, 12 years later, Onomatopee has developed into a large operation encompassing exhibitions, a design practice, publishing, gigs, readings, performances and “whatever else, such as a travel agency or a nail salon”.
