Illustrator Mariano Pascual's new website is an interactive and playful portal into his world

Apple-trillion-dollar-company-digital-itsnicethat-01 Work / Digital Apple has become the world’s first trillion dollar company

Proving that there’s a lot, like a lot, of money to be made from manufacturing laptops which can make you look 2% cooler than you actually are, as you sit in a coffee shop aimlessly wandering around the internet, the Guardian have reported that Apple have become the world’s first ever trillion dollar company.

Zero-digital-int-list Work / Digital Zero: A new publication that proves print and digital don't have to be mutually exclusive

Zero is a digital and physical publication realised by Dagnė Petraityė, Inês Silva and Nathalie De Vallière of Central Saint Martins. The three creatives noticed that the publications that most inspired them, such as Aspen and Fluxus largely relied on “traditional analogue techniques”. Although George Maciunas incorporated objects into Fluxus, moving beyond the usual format of a magazine or a book, his was a project before the impact of digital technology. Many magazines today still cling to the archaic notion of print, and fail to interact with the internet – Zero aims to change this. “We thought it could be exciting to merge some of the things we love about magazines with more experimental characteristics of digital media”, they explain. The result is an amazing digital platform that explores the infinite possibilities of the internet and a printed, physical product that is “based on an unconventional folding system that mimics the online component”.

Felix-geen-digital-itsnicethat-list Work / Digital Half-Life, The Matrix and Alien: meet the sci-fi inspired motion designer, Felix Geen

It was while scrolling on Instagram that we first discovered the work of motion designer Felix Geen, courtesy of an ident he created for online music broadcasting platform, Boiler Room. Slick and reminiscent of many a sci-fi interface, the short clip sees smoke billowing in various shapes, interlocked with green strobes, eventually forming the Boiler Room logo. Intrigued, we checked out the rest of Felix’s work only to find an impressive roster of 3d videos and digital art.

Christophergolden-digital-int-list Work / Digital Christopher Golden creates colourful digital environments that utilise visual abnormalities

Christopher Golden, who works under the moniker The Studio Gold, uses CGI and new media platforms to create visual content that “activates architectural and digital landscapes”. Inspired by companies who fit their stores experimentally, such as the Korean brand Gentle Monsters, Christopher is drawn to synthetic spaces. He mimics them, using 3D as a medium or tool “to create digital realism that simulates the real world in a similar way”. His work is hyperrealistic yet at the same time, their vibrant colours and strange movements create anomalies that give the pieces a unique twist. “Abnormalities create pieces that stand out from the crowd”, he tells us, “it’s also a way to provide a signature element that becomes a key component to the overall composition”.

Territory-007-digital-int-list Work / Digital Territory Studio designs media for James Bond experience in the Austrian mountains

Set upon the summit of Gaislachkogl, an icy, snow-capped mountain in Sölden, Austria, a striking new modernist gallery has been built. It houses a breathtaking new exhibit, 007 Elements, the world’s first cinematic installation dedicated to the world of James Bond. The visitor journeys through a series of high tech, interactive galleries, “each distilling the craft of the signature elements that define a Bond film”. It is an immersive, educational experience “that places the guests inside the world of 007 while also revealing how that world is made”.

Zak-group-graphic-design-itsnicethat-list Work / Digital Zak Group designs a digital platform for the museum M+, four years before it opens

“How can a website provide a curatorial platform for a museum in progress?” Zak Group, commissioned to design M+ Stories four years in advance of the opening of M+, the museum of visual culture in Hong Kong, are doing just that .

Mariano-pascual-digital-list Work / Digital Illustrator Mariano Pascual's new website is an interactive and playful portal into his world

As a creative, your online portfolio is an incredibly important thing. With sites like Instagram and Behance becoming more and more popular as a way to showcase work, the humble website still retains an edge over its well-followed competitors, and that’s its flexibility. A website is fully customisable from its URL to its loading page, navigation and even sound effects. It has the ability to truly embody your personality whether that be in an outlandish or nuanced way. It’s this pliability that Argentinian illustrator Mariano Pascual decided to co-opt recently when giving his site a refresh.

Gaika-system-somerset-house-itsnicethat-01 Work / Art Gaika talks us through his brand new audiovisual paean to the migrant experience, System

Gaika’s dad was a handy bloke to know. A Jamaican immigrant living in Brixton, he was a scientist with an enviable record collection who possessed the kind of Caribbean connections that made sourcing sought-after 12”s a doddle.

Max-siedentopf-jp-bonino-publication-itsnicethat-list Work / Publication Bananas and “a whole lot of the bad luck”: Max Siedentopf and JP Bonino's latest collaboration

Is there much that’s funnier than someone slipping on a banana skin? We can’t think of too many answers to that question here at It’s Nice That so when we saw the latest absurd (and very good) collaboration between Max Siedentopf and JP Bonino we got very excited.

Its-nice-that-after-school-club-max-guther-list Features / Miscellaneous A week at Eike König's female-led and thought-provoking After School Club

At Eike König’s After School Club, there’s everything a design student could ever need. Want to print an A2 artwork of something you’re working on? You can do it and it’s free. Need advice on what typeface is best for something? One of the world’s best designers is sitting over there. In need of a cold coffee to combat the summer heat and your hangover? The cafe serves it with ice or ice cream.

List-image1 Work / Graphic Design Estudio Margem combines timeless design with innovative printing techniques

Translated into English, the Portuguese word ‘margem’ means ‘margin’ and that’s a suitably chosen name for a studio determined to stretch its work beyond the limits of generic restriction. Founded in 2014, Estudio Margem is the brainchild of Alexandre Lindenberg and Nathalia Cury, who met while studying at the University of São Paulo, Brazil. It was there that they fell in love with concrete poetry, the Bauhaus movement and Russian Avant-Garde. “Since then, we have been seeking to find principles common to those languages and contemporary discussions about the clash between modernity and postmodernity”, the studio explains.

Roxy-rezvany-film-itsnicethat-list Work / Film Little Pyongyang asks you to "leave behind everything you think you know" about North Korea

The rhetoric surrounding North Korea is jarring, to say the least. British and American coverage of the country tends to focus on the perceived oddities of Kim Jong-Un, or the atrocities of the nation’s regimes and nuclear programmes. Seldom do we hear from North Korean civilians themselves, and when we do, we tend to concentrate on tales of plight. Roxy Rezvany’s new short film Little Pyongyang voices frustration with that mode of expression. Not just a North Korean story, the film is an exploration of the nature of documentary storytelling itself, and the way design can empower and elevate it.

Benoit-paille-photography-it'snicethat-list Work / Photograhy Benoit Paillé creatively reimagines the world with his hallucinogenic photography

As the almost unreadable biography on his website reads, Benoit Paillé is a self-professed “conscious agitator and creative genius”. Zonked on Ritalin for his most crucial years, Benoit stumbled into the lap of art, and now he believes it “sustains him more than leftover hot dogs."

Gregholland-mexico-photography-itsnicethat-list Work / Photography Greg Holland's photographic career spans from hardcore shows to shooting for NGO's

Photographer Greg Holland’s career spans across genres, mediums and countries. Originally from the north of England, at school he chose to study music and in fact, it was through playing in bands — as well as a girlfriend who introduced him to Martin Parr — that he eventually ended up putting down instruments and picking up cameras instead.

Graphic-design-festival-2018-graphic-design-itsnicethat-list Work / Graphic Design Graphic Design Festival Scotland's fifth birthday identity toes the line between serious and silly

Over the past five years, Graphic Design Festival Scotland (GDFS) has solidified itself as the go-to event to see some of the UK’s best international talent in graphic design. Taking place from 19–25 October this year, the programme is as packed as ever, featuring talks from David Carson, Erik Kessels and GraphicDesign&, as well as workshops, Q&As, music and exhibitions, all in Glasgow’s Lighthouse.

Diary_aug_724x474 Regulars / Diary August diary: this month's must-see events and exhibitions

The month of August tends to be a bit quieter, dare we say it, than the rest of the year. Offices are semi-deserted as everyone heads off on their various holidays, from Marbella to Morocco via Margate, and the rest of the country adopts a slightly slower pace (how could we possibly function at full speed in this heat?). Make the most of the summer’s longer evenings, and actually leaving the office on time, by visiting some of the many art shows and exhibitions taking place around the UK and the rest of the world. h3. Crystal-zapata-graphic-design-it'snicethat-list Work / Graphic Design Crystal Zapata's work joins the dots between radical Italian design and Chicago house

As a child, Crystal Zapata made collages out of magazine clippings, drawing everything she had collected together onto the page; this love soon grew into a passion for graphic design, and is visible in the delicately-layered posters she produces today.

Using her childhood knack for experimentation, Crystal’s aesthetic is, in her words, “a cocktail of ideas, references, and influences that have been manipulated, stretched, inverted, deleted, and reverted”. Her design is playful but contains beautiful formal moments. The abstract shapes are loud and fun, bouncing around each other, and the typography is minimal and robust, standing strong against a colourful background.

Pentagram-abbottmiller-mahjongg-publication-itsnicethat-list Work / Publication Pentagram's Abbott Miller's book on the game of Mahjong gets a reissue

The game of Mahjong has a long and fascinating history. Beginning in ancient China and originally developed in the Qing dynasty, it then made its way to the States. Fast forward to the 1920s and 30s and Americans became transfixed by the fast-paced nature of moving 144 tiles. More recently, it has experienced another resurgence in London too, where players arrange meet-ups or head to XU teahouse for a game. Just before it quickly grew in popularity here in the UK, Abbott Miller, a Pentagram partner since 1999, worked on a book which visually told this history, Mah Jongg: Crak, Bam, Dot released in 2010. This month, the “publication that celebrates the fascinating history and visual universe of the game,” has been reissued in a new edition by its original publishers, 2wice.

Spaghetti-bolo-poster-exhibition-graphic-design-itsnicethat-05 Work / Graphic Design The posters for Switzerland’s first ever spaghetti bolognese festival look tasty as hell

If we barged between you and your pals after work one evening, thick, syrupy IPA spilling over the lip of our pint glass, and asked if any of you had any idea of what “bolo-spirit” is, would you? The answer is probably not, unless you were enjoying a pleasant chat with Swiss design duo Katrin von Niederhäusern and Dominique Magnusson , the curators of what may well be the first ever spaghetti bolognese themed poster collection.
