Digital artist Oli Frost’s latest project explores the potential power of ‘Nice Fake News’

Zero-digital-int-list Work / Digital Zero: A new publication that proves print and digital don't have to be mutually exclusive

Zero is a digital and physical publication realised by Dagnė Petraityė, Inês Silva and Nathalie De Vallière of Central Saint Martins. The three creatives noticed that the publications that most inspired them, such as Aspen and Fluxus largely relied on “traditional analogue techniques”. Although George Maciunas incorporated objects into Fluxus, moving beyond the usual format of a magazine or a book, his was a project before the impact of digital technology. Many magazines today still cling to the archaic notion of print, and fail to interact with the internet – Zero aims to change this. “We thought it could be exciting to merge some of the things we love about magazines with more experimental characteristics of digital media”, they explain. The result is an amazing digital platform that explores the infinite possibilities of the internet and a printed, physical product that is “based on an unconventional folding system that mimics the online component”.

Felix-geen-digital-itsnicethat-list Work / Digital Half-Life, The Matrix and Alien: meet the sci-fi inspired motion designer, Felix Geen

It was while scrolling on Instagram that we first discovered the work of motion designer Felix Geen, courtesy of an ident he created for online music broadcasting platform, Boiler Room. Slick and reminiscent of many a sci-fi interface, the short clip sees smoke billowing in various shapes, interlocked with green strobes, eventually forming the Boiler Room logo. Intrigued, we checked out the rest of Felix’s work only to find an impressive roster of 3d videos and digital art.

Christophergolden-digital-int-list Work / Digital Christopher Golden creates colourful digital environments that utilise visual abnormalities

Christopher Golden, who works under the moniker The Studio Gold, uses CGI and new media platforms to create visual content that “activates architectural and digital landscapes”. Inspired by companies who fit their stores experimentally, such as the Korean brand Gentle Monsters, Christopher is drawn to synthetic spaces. He mimics them, using 3D as a medium or tool “to create digital realism that simulates the real world in a similar way”. His work is hyperrealistic yet at the same time, their vibrant colours and strange movements create anomalies that give the pieces a unique twist. “Abnormalities create pieces that stand out from the crowd”, he tells us, “it’s also a way to provide a signature element that becomes a key component to the overall composition”.

Territory-007-digital-int-list Work / Digital Territory Studio designs media for James Bond experience in the Austrian mountains

Set upon the summit of Gaislachkogl, an icy, snow-capped mountain in Sölden, Austria, a striking new modernist gallery has been built. It houses a breathtaking new exhibit, 007 Elements, the world’s first cinematic installation dedicated to the world of James Bond. The visitor journeys through a series of high tech, interactive galleries, “each distilling the craft of the signature elements that define a Bond film”. It is an immersive, educational experience “that places the guests inside the world of 007 while also revealing how that world is made”.

Zak-group-graphic-design-itsnicethat-list Work / Digital Zak Group designs a digital platform for the museum M+, four years before it opens

“How can a website provide a curatorial platform for a museum in progress?” Zak Group, commissioned to design M+ Stories four years in advance of the opening of M+, the museum of visual culture in Hong Kong, are doing just that .

Based out of Kansas City, Missouri, it is these makers “primary mission to collaborate on innovative projects with artists internationally,” the designers explain. “Overlapping our aesthetic with other creative mindsets often produces unique and exciting outcomes,” as well as the digital age, “offering endless opportunities to link with other artists.”

Superimpose-bookshelf-itsnicethat-list Regulars / Bookshelf From data collection to the role camo plays in fashion: Superimpose's Bookshelf

It comes as no surprise to us that our readers are familiar with the work of Superimpose. From video content for Adidas and visual campaigns for Burberry to its own platform Services Unknown; what haven’t the studio done. Champions of fresh and exciting work, the studio creates innovative and forward-thinking commercial work that challenges brands to go further and think deeper.

Morganhillmurphy-photography-itsnicethat-list Work / Photography Morgan Hill-Murphy's Italian summer: "a playground of incredible light and fantastic wrinkly old men"

London-based photographer Morgan Hill-Murphy has been on a long trip to Italy. Living in Bagheria, a town next to Palermo for just over a month, the photographer headed out with an open mind, thinking a loose photography project would come of it, maybe. With no forced plan in mind, he adopted the Sicilian routine. Days begun by going to the market, popping back to the same cafes, he regularly went to church. Morgan wanted to “understand what it is to be a Sicilian,” and in turn, he’s created a series that makes us all wish we were.

Potionpictures-loveisland2018-graphicdesign-itsnicethat-list Work / Graphic Design My typeface on paper: the makings of the Love Island logo

Once again this year, one television programme had us glued to screens. It’s been another season of not just summer, but love. Each night across the UK, viewers have been making sure they’re home for nine PM for Love Island, to tune into a villa in Mallorca where singletons cracked on, did bits, got texts and four final couples yesterday finally found love.

Richard-kovacs-photography-itsnicethat-list Work / Photography Photographer Richard Kovacs uses experimental lighting to showcase Lagos' fashion scene

London-based Hungarian photographer Richard Kovacs’ practice encompasses traditional fashion photography combined with some other approach or genre, resulting in work that is as distinctive as it is accomplished. “Most fashion imagery is very boring these days and many image makers are copying, consciously or unconsciously, a few of the successful trendy photographers, which is a shame,” he tells It’s Nice That. It’s this desire to do different that has propelled his recent series I Will See You in My Dreams, which combines experimental techniques, documentary and fashion photography.

Laurence-stephens-photography-itsnicethat-list Work / Publication Laurence Stephens documents weary holiday-makers and stuffy museums in his book Bored Tourists

Holidays are weighted with expectation. Every hour in every airport and train station around the world, tourists arrive with brimming suitcases and hopes of what will potentially be the best trip of their life. When visiting Barcelona, London-based photographer, Laurence Stephens, found himself ducking off the bustling streets and into the cool, dark interior of the city’s Cathedral. Here, he quickly realised the humorous photographic potential that tourist traps like these could offer. “Juxtaposed against the beautiful architecture was an array of bemused, disillusioned tourists, bored, half-asleep, unintentionally waiting to be photographed,” he recalls.

Listimage_2 Partnership / Dropbox: Monthly Poster Alexandra Waespi and Alexa Viscius use cyanotype and long exposure to create a melting poster

For Chicago-based graphic designer Alexa Viscius, London-based photographer Alexandra Waespi, and pretty much everyone else in the world, the month of July has been an absolute scorcher. It’s been weeks of glorious weather but it’s also been a stickily hot one, a feeling both Alexandra and Alexa experienced in their respective cities across the globe.

Edith-young-art-historical-palettes-art-itsnicethat-list Work / Art "Painterly Pantones": Photographer Edith Young on her art history-inspired series of colour palettes

“All my life I’ve pursued the perfect red”, sighed Diane Vreeland, once editor-in-chief of Vogue, in the 2011 documentary, The Eye Has To Travel. “I can never get painters to mix it for me. It’s exactly as if I’d said, ‘I want Rococo with a spot of Gothic in it and a bit of Buddhist temple’ – they have no idea what I’m talking about. About the best red is to copy the colour of a child’s cap in any Renaissance portrait.” Hearing these words, in an indie cinema in Providence, Rhode Island, photographer Edith Young – “struck by this inexact and somewhat ludicrous idea of perfection in colour” – had a lightbulb moment.

Bexday-bodybuildersberlin-photography-itsnicethat-list Work / Photography Bex Day photographs the beaming smiles and fading tans of Berlin's bodybuilders

Bex Day’s photography portfolio zips between fashion editorials and documentary focused projects with aplomb. When it comes to the latter, Bex has found herself becoming the go-to-girl for capturing individuality amongst massed groups. Her most recent project is a brilliant example of this ability to assess both the unit and the whole.

Ryanshorosky-timemagazine-photography-itsnicethat-list Work / Photography How commissioned jobs have expanded Ryan Shorosky's creative practice

Whether he’s embarking on cross-country road trips, or photographing portraits that reveal as much about place as they do personality, American photographer Ryan Shorosky has an intimate feel for his home country. Blessed with an understanding of individual cultures and ways of life, he’s set out to communicate them.

List Features / Art Democratising art: how the art world is opening up to blind and partially sighted visitors

“Blind people experience art exactly the same way as everyone else, they just have, and need, different methods of gaining that experience,” says David Johnson, a Hitchin-based artist who is registered blind. “Blind people experience the same emotions as everyone else, they are subject to the same feelings of attraction or repulsion as others; however, they need alternative sensory pathways to gain that experience whether through touch, audio description or other inroads.”

Loren-garciot-graphic-design-itsnicethat-list Work / Graphic Design For Loren Garciot, designers are graphic translators of thought

When Loren Garciot was young she wanted to be the president of her home country, Spain. That ambition changed when she started to wonder who designed the logo on cans of Coke. Could you, she asked herself, make money from doing that? She soon discovered you could, and her passion for graphic design took flight.

Brodie-kaman-graphic-design-itsnicethat-list Work / Graphic Design Designer Brodie Kaman on how creative outlets can help control mental illness and addiction

We’ve long admired the work of Australian graphic designer Brodie Kaman, with its DIY aesthetic and experimental, dogged visuals. Based in Los Angeles the last time spoke to him, the designer has since spent time in London, before recently settling in Berlin, and has begun to explore self-discovery and human individual suffering within his personal work, both as a coping mechanism and a creative outlet.

Bodenworld-publication-itsnicethat-list Work / Publication Meet Boden World, the multi-faceted student design studio, clothing brand and publisher

Here in England Boden is known as a bit of a mum-sy brand, a go-to for linen shorts and dungarees for kids. In Oslo however, Boden World is a design studio and clothing brand set up by three students, Axel Berggraf Egenæs, Jonas Vetlesen and Elias Bjørnson Olderbakk, working across art direction, graphic design, illustration, photography, film, branding and concept development. What can’t these students do!?

Daiana-ruiz-illustration-itsnicethat-list Work / Illustration Daiana Ruiz's illustrations use abstract elements to create fierce portraits of women

Daiana Ruiz combines figurative and abstract elements to create harmonious illustrations of strong and diverse women. “I have always been aware of the lack of representation of real women in the media”, she tells us. “That’s why I would like to represent us as we are, with different body types”. The females depicted in Daiana’s illustrations are curved, strong and agile, a contemporary take on ancient Greek goddesses or Amazon warriors. “For me, a strong woman is a free woman, and I like to represent that concept”, she explains, and her figures stare straight at us, fierce and unwavering, challenging us to challenge them. We certainly wouldn’t dream of messing with them.

Laura-coombs-graphic-design-itsnicethat-list Work / Graphic Design The typographically focused, conceptually-minded practice of designer Laura Coombs

For New York City-based graphic designer Laura Coombs, the path to her, now, chosen career was extremely winding and full of chance encounters. Like many, however, her interest in the world of design was clear from an early age. “I can see now that I was always interested in design – I edited and designed a newspaper as a kid, endearingly called the Laura Report,” she recalls fondly.
