Graphic designer Osheyi Adebayo’s output is impressive, to say the least. We last checked in with him around this time last year where his portfolio of school text book-inspired designs was already jam-packed. Since then, the London-based designer has been tirelessly producing posters on a daily basis, uploading them to his Instagram account.

Glasgow International is Scotland’s largest festival for contemporary art, taking place across three weeks every two years. As a festival that places Glasgow in the international spotlight of the art world, it’s one that requires an identity which embodies the city’s personality and translates this on a global scale. For this year’s festival – Gi2018 – this responsibility fell to Kerr Vernon and Ed Watt of Glasgow-based studio, Cause & Effect.

“I have a passion for making work that addresses injustice,” says photographer Thom Pierce, whose latest project, Postcards from Xolobeni, transformed his portraits of a community threatened by a proposed titanium mine into powerful letters of protest. “I want to take important stories and make them something that can’t ignore be ignored,” Thom continues. “I want to go further and think more broadly to find ways that engage large audiences in a subject that they might not ever know about and then give them a means to engage, participate and join the fight.”

“I was a teenager in the late 1980s and unemployed,” Elaine Constantine tells me first off. “Like most kids my age at that time in the north west of England, my prospects were bleak. I’d been at a bad school and unless you’d been lucky enough to go to a grammar school, you came away at 16 still struggling with the basics.” Renowned for her honest, expressive and observational photography, Elaine is now one of the most well-respected photographers in the fashion industry, a Bafta-nominated film director and has exhibited in legendary exhibitions like Tate Britain’s Look at Me and the V&A’s Imperfect Beauty.

Illustrator Oscar Mitchell has been very busy with his multitude of drawing tools. Two Venezuelans, one in Paris, one in Melbourne, met across Dropbox Paper this month to co-create an exuberant poster, fusing their complementary creative techniques. Nadia Hernández brought along her paper-cut, folklore-inspired shapes and type; Carlín Díaz brought his charming, textural characters and forms. The final poster will be given out to every Nicer Tuesdays attendee on 29 May, and here, we share a behind-the-scenes look at their collaborative process.

Photographer Rosie Matheson has spent the past three years documenting young men to better understand what modern masculinity looks like. “I was surrounded by photography from a young age; my grandad worked at Kodak and photographer Zed Nelson is a close friend of my parents. I’ve been comfortable with a camera in my hands since I can remember, and it’s always been my main form of expressing how I feel and of navigating the world around me,” the photographer tells It’s Nice That.

Every year, in May, hoards of publishers and book-obsessives flock to the Tate Modern in London to ogle over the tasty publications and prints that people have been producing over the previous 12 months at Offprint. This year, one of the featured publishers manning a stand was Kiosk, where it used the occasion to launch several zines, one of which, was created by It’s Nice That fave, Tim Lahan.

Anglo-Bolivian photographer Nick Ballon describes his heritage as the “backbone to [his] photographic practice as an artist”. One ongoing project, for example, explores the possible implications of a country’s relationship to the coast, and the effects it can have on its population; Bolivia is a landlocked country whereas life in the UK means being within a 70-mile radius of the sea at all times. In Nick’s latest series Ciudad Rebelde, however, the photographer turns his lens on life in the Bolivian city of El Alto.

It’s quite difficult to describe how fascinating it is to look in someone else’s fridge, isn’t it? It’s totally normal really, everyone’s got one after all and everyone’s got to eat. But still, when offered the chance to take a peek at what condiments someone has, what their go-to snacks, meals, veg or drinks are, you’ll always take the offer and snoop. It’s this exact reason why French photographer Olivier Degorce’s latest book Fridge Food Soul is so captivating to flick through, despite its typical subject matter of quite literally what is in different people’s fridges.

From the horror of Weinstein to the strength of the #metoo movement, it’s been difficult to have a conversation about acting in the past year without the shadow of sexual harassment looming large. Tapping into this atmosphere, short film Krista by director Danny Madden explores the low-level threat constantly levelled at women and the empowerment that can come from reclaiming those experiences. The film tells the story of Krista, a high school student using her theatre class as catharsis. “The idea came from a combination of stories we’d heard from friends and that first point of realising that the world has teeth,” explains Danny. “It aims to show that helpless feeling of not knowing where to point frustration and anxiety, and how the theatre can create a space for releasing it.”
 
Peppered with powerful cut scenes between Krista’s performances and the emotional experiences she’s channelling, the atmosphere of the film is made all the more intense by its sound design. Foot stomps, claps and vocal exercises from the drama group’s warm-up were crafted into a rhythmic pattern which builds in momentum as the film progresses.

Usually found in Soho he can be spotted in the cafes and pubs populated by a unique community, who in an area of consistent gentrification manage to hold on to its inclusive and historic personality.

We’re big fans of Studio Moniker here at It’s Nice That. Based in Amsterdam, the interaction design studio churns out project after project that continues to surpass expectations and its most recent, titled Painted Earth, is no exception. Launched inline with the opening of the Galileo Reference Centre, the project sees Studio Moniker creating an interactive, collaborative painting tool that turns the surface of the Earth into a giant canvas.

For this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale, the British Pavilion takes on the provocative theme of Island, with a bare-bones public space atop the building’s roof. Below, the building will sit empty of exhibits. Both the elevated platform and vacuous space below will host events throughout the Biennale’s six-month run, with a broad range of creative contributors interpreting the subject of Island in depth, so it was imperative the branding not interfere with this openness and diversity. It was a compelling task for designer John Morgan, then, to come up with a visual identity, and he laughs as he remembers the early meetings in the building’s void.
