12 Saturday Morning Cartoons From The ‘80s You Probably Forgot Existed

1. Punky Brewster

Punky Brewster

Network: NBC

Original run: Sept. 14, 1985 –Dec. 6, 1986

Plot: A cartoon spin off of the wildly popular television show Punky Brewster, the series revolved around the adventures of Punky (voiced by Soleil Moon Frye) and her pet Glomer, who was a magical leprechaun gopher; because of course every ’80s cartoon needed anthropomorphic sidekick.

Punky Brewster intro:

2. Wuzzles

Wuzzles

Network: CBS

Original run: Sept. 14, 1985 –Dec. 7, 1985

Plot: The show revolved around the Wuzzles, a group of adorable (or possibly creepy) winged hybrid animals that lived in the Land of Wuz.

In retrospect, this show had some serious The Island of Doctor Moreau shit going on.

The Wuzzles was the first original animated series ever produced by Disney and with only 13 episodes produced, it was also its shortest.

Wuzzles intro:

3. Shirt Tales

Shirt Tales

Network: NBC

Original run: Sept. 18, 1982–Jan. 21, 1984

Plot: Based on a line of Hallmark greeting cards, the Shirt Tales were a group of secret crime-fighting animals.

Seriously, what criminal would suspect that those cute faces could kick-ass.

Shirt Tales intro:

4. Rubik, the Amazing Cube

Rubik, the Amazing Cube

Network: ABC

Original run: Sept. 10, 1983–Sept. 1, 1984

Plot: The series featured a creepy magical Rubik’s Cube (doesn’t get more ‘80s than that) named Rubik, who would come alive when the colored squares on his sides were matched up.

The cartoon has the distinction of being the first Saturday morning cartoon show to feature Latino children as the main characters.

Rubik, the Amazing Cube intro:

Fun fact: the theme song was song by Menudo.

5. Snorks

Snorks

Network: NBC

Original run: Sept. 15, 1984–May 13, 1989

Plot: A rip-off The Smurfs; Snorks were a race of seahorse like beings that lived underwater (in the ocean to be exact) in the world of Snorkland.

Somehow, this show managed to be more annoying than The Smurfs.

Snorks intro:

6. Hello Kitty’s Furry Tale Theater

Hello Kitty's Furry Tale Theater

Network: CBS

Original run: Sept. 19, 1987–Dec. 12, 1987

Plot: Each episode featured Hello Kitty and her friends recreating their own versions of popular fairy tales, movies, and stories.

The show really should have been called “Catnip’s Furry Tale Theater,” cause as the series’ main villain, Catnip stole all the scenes from boring ass Hello Kitty.

Hello Kitty’s Furry Tale Theater intro:

7. Kissyfur

Kissyfur

Network: NBC

Original run: Sept. 13, 1987–Aug. 25, 1990

Plot: Kissyfur and he is father, Gus, are two escaped circus bears that move to the swamps of Paddlecab County and run a water taxi company (because what else is an escaped circus bear supposed to do; he has no job skills).

Kissyfur intro:

8. Kidd Video

Kidd Video

Network: NBC

Original run: Sept. 15, 1984–Dec. 7, 1985

Plot: This MTV-esque mess of a show’s plot is best explained by Wiki:

“Kidd Video and his band of the same name (played by live-action performers in the first half of the title sequence) were kidnapped by a villain named Master Blaster, and transported to Master Blaster’s home dimension, a cartoon world called The Flipside. They were rescued by a fairy named Glitter [who rocked a very ‘80s Jennifer Beals in Flashdance inspired outfit] and subsequently spent each episode of the series either helping to free the denizens of the Flipside from Master Blaster’s rule, or trying to find a way back to the ‘real world.’ Master Blaster, who seemed to be a cartoonization of a corrupt rock manager or music executive, flew around the sky in his floating castle, which resembled a giant jukebox.”

Kidd Video intro:

9. The Berenstain Bears

The Berenstain Bears

Network: CBS

Original run: Sept. 14, 1985–March 7, 1987

Plot: An animated series based on the popular book series of the same name. Each episode featured two 11-minute episodes; the first being an adaptation of one of the books, and the second being an original story.

The Berenstain Bears intro:

10. Teen Wolf

Teen Wolf

Network: CBS

Original run: Sept. 17, 1986–Nov. 7, 1987

Plot: Based on the 1985 live-action film of the same name, this was the original Teen Wolf TV show. It was short-lived though, lasting only 21 episodes.

Also, the cartoon was short on ab shots.

Teen Wolf intro:

11. Dink, the Little Dinosaur

Dink, the Little Dinosaur

Network: CBS

Original run: Sept. 16, 1989–Nov. 3, 1990

Plot: The series was a rip-off of the film Land Before Time (long before the direct-to-video sequels), and it followed the adventures of Dink (basically the character of Little Foot) and his friends .

Dink, the Little Dinosaur intro:

12. The Flintstone Kids

The Flintstone Kids

Network: ABC

Original run: Sept. 6, 1986–Sept. 3, 1988

Plot: A reboot of the long time perennial favorite, The Flintstones , the series revolved around the adventures of Fred, Barney, Wilma, and Betty as annoying 8 to 10-year-olds

Unfortunately, each episode also featured the rather horrendous segment of “Captain Caveman and Son.”

The Flintstone Kids intro:
