Charming Baker guest edits The Big Issue Art edition featuring Paul Smith, Tim & Sue and more

Artist Charming Baker has guest edited the Art Special Edition of The Big Issue, under the theme Tipping Point. The issue features contributors including Peter Blake, Paul Smith, Tim Noble and Sue Webster, David Shrigley, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Rachel Howard, Hugo Wilson, Harland Miller, Rob and Nick Carter, Ben Eine, Gina Soden, Jonathan Yeo, Antony Micallef, Mat Collishaw, Chris Levine and Keith Tyson.

It will also publish artworks by The Big Issue vendors, “men and women on the edge of society, either suffering from addiction, mental health or homelessness issues who use art as an outlet to deal with their problems,” says the magazine.

Ten “golden tickets” will be hidden in copies of the special issue, recipients of which will win an exclusive, hand-finished and signed print by Charming or Jonathan. There will also be a Tipping Point exhibition of many of the contributed artworks at Jealous Gallery in Shoreditch, London from 3–16 April 2017.

Charming says the theme Tipping Point reflects “key decisive moments that lives can hinge on, moments that can tip things up or down. The Big Issue vendors know more keenly than most how delicate the balance can be, and how quickly that tipping point can have negative, or down the road, positive effect”.

The Art Special Edition of The Big Issue is out 3 April. The Big Issue is a weekly magazine sold in Britain by people encountering homelessness or poverty.

Ekta-ektalist Work / Art Swedish artist Ekta reconsiders simple geometric shapes

Ekta, real name Daniel Gotesson, is a 38-year-old artist who currently lives and works in Gothenburg, Sweden. Daniel’s creative background is rooted in skateboarding and graffiti, scenes which still inspire his work. “I got very important sources of inspiration in those years and it still has an affect on what I do,” Daniel says. “I’m not from a very cultural family or environment but I think in a way that was an advantage, I had to find my own.”

Gallery-of-everything_ion-barladeanu_barl-063 Work / Art 71-year-old, formerly homeless Romanian collage artist Ion Bârlādeanu opens first UK show

Romanian collage artist Ion Bârlādeanu, now 71, was made homeless following the 1989 revolution in his home country. He lived for almost 20 years in the rubbish tip under a block of flats, making collage artworks from magazines and other trash he found, satirising both the Communist former nation and the capitalist, celebrity culture he once admired. Ranging from the lighthearted to the darkly comical, and dangerously risky amid the tumultuous political era, the works were a relief for the artist and a candid social commentary.

Crys_yin_itsnicethat_list Work / Art Artist Crys Yin adds comical elements to her simply-executed paintings

Artist Crys Yin transitioned into painting full time around three years ago. California-born, New York-based Crys describes her style as “odd, absurd and physical”, with comical elements “even when the overall mood is meant to be somber or detached”. For the artist, the more nonsensical the better and she pulls from real-life experiences, from childhood memories to everyday occurrences, to inspire her simple paintings. “For instance, one of my paintings is based on a reoccurring dream I had for years and years, and another is something I saw walking home the other day,” explains Crys.

List Work / Art Artist Eva Papamargariti takes us inside her digital dreamscapes

We came across artist and designer Eva Papamargariti’s work in Margot Bowman’s film Come Inside It’s Amazing, where her glistening, dreamy digiscapes point the way to a mesmerising alternate universe packed with playfulness. Her practise built around time-based media such as video, digital installations and gifs meditating on themes of landscapes and environment, and the future: work so complex that engaging with it is like considering the edges of infinity.
